In our inaugural monthly column featuring a member of our stellar cast of designers on Avenue 32, we probe into their life beyond work and ask them searching questions, including which fictional characters do they most relate to and what they would be if they weren’t in fashion.

With their clean lines and minimal hardware, Lizzy Disney’s accessories perfectly reflect her own, pared-down style. Having trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martins, the Sheffield native spent the past decade working between New York and London. Her much-lauded eponymous line, which included ready-to-wear, was launched in 2000 and led to her being hired as creative director of Parisian heritage label Jacques Fath in 2002. In 2010 Disney returned to the UK to start afresh, and it was here that her concise, ultra-chic collection of handmade bags, jewellery and scarves was born. “For the past five years there have been so many accessories with so much going on that I guess it was a rebellion against that,” explains Disney. “I wanted to make something that was mine again and something quite pure.”

Avenue 32: Which fictional character do you most identify with?

To be honest, I’m more of a realist than a fantasist.

What’s your biggest indulgence?

Shoes and daily trips to Waitrose.

What’s your signature dish?

Breakfast in bed.

Name one item of clothing that you can’t live without?

Black cashmere jumpers.

What piece of art do you dream of owning?

Triptych by Francis Bacon.

Name three people for a dream dinner party scenario.

My three closest friends, because they don’t all live in the same country.

What movie do you never tire of seeing?

Any kitchen-sink drama, such as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Pumpkin Eater with Anne Bancroft, or anything with historical footage of New York, including The Naked City, Taxi Driver and On the Waterfront.

Which historical figure would you most like to wear your designs?

Coco Chanel would be great!

If you weren’t a fashion designer, what would you be?

A meteorologist. I’m obsessed with the weather.

Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon.

iPhone.

Late night, but working on early morning.
