SONIA RYKIEL

THE STORY

Born in Paris, the late, enigmatic fashion designer Sonia Rykiel opened her first store in 1968 on Paris’ Left Bank with early clients including Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Audrey Hepburn. Renowned for her cool, Parisian take on womenswear and accessories and dubbed ‘The Queen of Knits’, Rykiel’s liberating sense of style has now been passed onto Julie de Libran who heads up the ready-to-wear label with contemporary chic yet still taps into the iconic French designer’s signatures as an honouring tribute.

THIS SEASON

Presented at the École des Beaux-Arts venue, Sonia Rykiel’s SS17 collection was a memorable tribute to the passing of the Parisian designer last year and the finale ended with tributes to her iconic sweaters that stole the show and swept the audience with teary eyes. With that, it was rightfully so to choose freedom as the new season theme with womens clothing based on workwear and uniforms that took on a breezy, summer twist to diminish the usual conformity. Proportions were oversized, focusing away from the body with trapeze tops and trousers, puff-sleeve knits and oversized tote bags that showed the clever use of fabrics on offer; think crisp cottons, brocade and canvas. Our favourite pieces were the navy striped sweaters with bell sleeves taking cue from sailors’ marinières.
